Plaza Italia

One of the city's busiest junctions.

In the centre of this square, there's a monument to the Italian nationalist general and politician Giuseppe Garibaldi, a replica of a monument in Brescia, Italy. Garibaldi lived in several South American countries in the mid-19th century - in 1842 and 1843 he led the defense of Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital, against Argentina's attacks. Near to the square, you'll find the traditional "mateos" - horsedrawn carriages that offer sightseeing rides.
