La Poesía

Former meeting place for the city's poets

The cafe La Poesía, in the heat of San Telmo, was a meeting place for the poets of the 1960s including Juan Gelman, Francisco Paco Urondo, Olga Orozco and Alejandra Pizarnik. It was founded by Rubén Derlis, himself a poet, and attracted many intellectuals and bohemians with literature, jazz, theatre and poetry events until it closed in 1988.

It re-opened in 2008 with the same character as before, and serves abundant dishes, including a range of cold platters.

Tango lyricist Horacio Ferrer met his wife Lucia Michelli here and wrote her a poem called Lulu, which was later adapted into a waltz by composer Raúl Garello. A plaque on one of the tables pays homage to the couple’s meeting.
